Prompt: Write about something that takes time.
May 25, 2026 — Something That Takes Time
Alright, the prompt for today, May 25th, 2026, is: write about something that takes time.
Oh boy.
Yep. Lots of things take time.
Healing takes time. My wrist is taking far too long to heal. I understand that it needs to heal properly, and that takes time, but boy am I becoming incredibly impatient about it.
But what I am learning is that putting in the time, putting in the work, is what makes things worthwhile — what makes things valuable.
In thinking about woodworking, more specifically hand tool woodworking and developing my craft, I’m realizing that it’s going to take a lot of time. And I’ve tried to move through it too fast. Where I’ve ended up is further ahead, of course, but I think I could have done a lot better had I slowed down from the beginning.
Yeah, I guess it’s like anything.
If you want to become a writer, you really have to slow down and take steps back and understand the fundamentals and read. Then you can start writing.
If you want to become a gymnast — actually, gymnasts peak at like twelve, don’t they? — but they still have to put in a lot of work and time to get there.
I don’t believe in this 10,000-hour rule. I don’t think that’s true. I think you need focused attention and deliberateness — is that a word?
You have to do something deliberately, with intention and purpose, in order to improve and become good at it.
I notice this with students too, in terms of learning. The students who don’t put in the work don’t put in the time and often aren’t learning. Yet there are some kids who start sharper off the block and can pick things up quickly, but learning itself isn’t their issue.
Implementing that learning — understanding how to use it — that’s where it becomes different.
What are you going to do with that knowledge now that you have it?
Just collecting it has its own value, I think, but what are you going to do with it?
So anyway, I think everything in its own time, right?
I think that’s really what it is. We have to give things time.
And that’s one thing our society is really moving away from — or has moved away from. We want everything quickly. We want it now. We want Amazon speeds, and we want AI responses.
And that’s taken something away.
It’s definitely taken something away from my life in terms of my ability to think and focus and clearly define what I want my life to look like.
Yeah. So, you know, it’s not too late.
There’s still time, as it were, to make that change.
Anyway, here comes the ad.
