May 18, 2026: Slowing Down

Prompt: Write about a time life made you slow down.

The prompt for today, May 18th, 2026, is: write about a time life made you slow down.

I’m living it right now.

Falling off my bike and breaking the scaphoid bone in my right wrist has forced me to slow down. But let me go through some of the things I’ve done since slowing down.

I bought a rock tumbler to polish rocks — and soon, glass — because I have an idea for a pen rest. I’m starting to grow herbs. I bought an olive tree so that I can make a bonsai out of it. I’m trying to grow rosemary from seed, which is apparently quite difficult.

I’m 3D printing lamps. I’ve been working on another design. I’ve been making bud vases out of eco-resin.

I’m just looking around my office as I’m recording this.

Oh right — and then I started this audio journal.

That’s me slowing down. All of these things are because I can do them largely with one hand. That’s why.

When I went to get my wrist checked out, we did some blood work and I found out I have high cholesterol, so I’ve had to adjust my diet. I’ve been doing that as well.

The only thing I stopped doing that I would normally do is my morning pages. Writing anything by hand right now is awful.

I also started using Apple’s Journal app because I can use it with my left hand.

My mind doesn’t seem capable of slowing down.

Oh — I also started reading on my Kobo. I’ve been wanting to read more, and this is actually a great opportunity. The Kobo works well for this because you don’t have to turn pages — you can just click the buttons. But I can’t use the pen feature on it, so there’s that.

My mind just doesn’t seem to want to slow down ever, and I think that’s my fault. I’m constantly looking for something else to do.

I guess my mind and I are distinct? I don’t know. That’s a good question.

People talk about meditation as a practice to control your mind, so perhaps it is distinct.

Anyway, that’s what slowing down has looked like for me.

And yeah — it’s all slowing down because it’s done with my non-dominant side.

Anyway, here comes the ad.

You can find this prompt and more at  Letters’ Lounge. Leave a link to your blog or audio journal or whatever else you’re working on. I’d love to hear what you’ve got to say.

All right. I’ll talk to you tomorrow, folks.
