Prompt: Write about water.

The prompt for today, May 22nd, 2026, is: write about water.

When I’m thinking about this — and this is going to sound strange, because it sounds strange even as I’m thinking about it — I think my relationship with water has changed lately. If for no other reason, I can’t really get my right hand wet for fear that I’ll ruin my cast. So everything’s being done with my left hand. Even washing my hands has been… well, that’s been an issue.

What else has changed?

I got a bidet to help me clean. Yeah. And it’s just different now — my relationship with water.

But I guess what really stands out in my mind is when we took Emi to the splash pad for the first time. She didn’t get in the water as such, but Hannah took her and put her hand into a stream of water and things like that. Just watching Emi’s reaction was interesting. She has this very skeptical, scouring look on her face until she figures out what’s going on, and then she’s quite pleased. So of course she did that with the water.

And then with growing plants as well — I’ve been trying to grow some herbs — how they interact with water is interesting. Each herb — and I mean, you wouldn’t really think about this until you start doing it — requires different amounts of water and different types of soil because of how the soil retains water.

Even the pot matters. A terracotta pot will help the soil dry out faster than, say, a plastic pot. And so there’s misting, you know, and some plants need the soil to dry out completely and then be re-watered, while others like a nice, consistent moisture. Not wet, but consistent.

So there are all these different ways that plants interact with water, and then the soil has to interact with the water too.

Yeah. I guess finally — and this is way off — I wanted to design a 3D printed water feature of some sort. I’ve been hanging on to this little pump from one of our old cat water fountains. I’ve been carrying it around for probably two or three years now and haven’t done anything with it. But I probably should.

Yeah. So water is an interesting thing, I think. We all need it. We all can’t survive without it. But we don’t give it enough thought.

Anyway, here comes the ad.

This prompt and more can be found at Letters’ Lounge. Of course, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the issue, or in response to what I have to say. Please leave a comment or a link to your blog or audio journal or podcast or whatever it may be.

Alright, folks. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.
