Prompt: Write about an afternoon.
The prompt for today, May 21st, 2026, is write about an afternoon.
Afternoons have started to look a lot different lately. Being home, I’m seeing different things — how the day actually plays out at home. It’s an interesting time because Emi sleeps for about twelve hours and is awake for about twelve hours. Actually, she naps anywhere from an hour to four hours during that time, so she’s not really up for all of it.
But she needs that stretch in the afternoon to sort of unwind and transition into the evening before bed around seven. Afternoons have become this time where we’re not scrambling exactly, but pacing ourselves differently. We can’t just suddenly run out and do things anymore. Even getting groceries has to be planned.
With Emi, we have to feed her at the right time so she’s hungry enough to eat before bed, but not too hungry. We have to plan dinner so she eats on time, gets to her bath on time, and ends up in bed on time. The whole rhythm of the day feels different now.
Now that the weather’s nice, afternoons look more like walks and time outside, which has been good. It’s a nice transition point in the day. Those are nice afternoons.
I do remember afternoons at work, though. There was often that feeling of searching for the clock. The fatigue would set in, and you’d think, Okay, just get through this period, then the next one. Two more after that. And then the bell would ring at the end of the day and you’d remember you still had to clean up, get ready for tomorrow, and finish all the little things before you could leave. By the time you got home, it was already evening.
The afternoon exists in this strange in-between space. The morning has energy and optimism — the feeling that the day could still become something. The evening is for winding down and sorting through what happened in preparation for tomorrow. But the afternoon feels transitional. A kind of middle ground between momentum and rest.
Anyway, here comes the ad.
