In today’s video, I use Ebony and Birdseye Maple wood with gold hardware to turn a Baron fountain pen. The profile for this pen looks simple enough but it tested the steadiness of my hand. I like the contrast of the woods on the pen – it’s a satisfying imbalance. The finish is Shellawax, allowing for the Ebony to really come through.

In this week’s video, I turn a cigar pen with Ebony wood and chrome hardware. This pen is part of a custom order for a men’s clothing store in Toronto. Ebony is a dusty wood to work with, especially when using carbide chisels, but it finishes beautifully. I used a simple friction finish, Shellawax, to help preserve the feeling of the wood. In this video, I turn a European Round Top pen using Sugar Maple wood and gunmetal hardware. I like the grip section of this one. The bulbous part gives your fingers a nice place to sit while writing. These light-coloured woods look better to me each time I turn one.

In this video, I turn a virage fountain pen using Curly Maple wood and gold hardware. I like this design quite a bit; I’ve done something similar with other woods. I was worried that the light colour of the wood would clash with the gold but it turned out to be all right.

I turn a cigar pen in this video, using Maple wood and two-tone chrome hardware. These pens have a nice bulk to them, they feel solid in your hand. The Maple has a beautiful grain pattern that really comes through when the pen is finished with CA.

In this video, I turn a pen using a flower petal pen blank that I cast with resin. It was a good learning experience. It had to be because the whole process, from gluing the petals to a dowel to turning the pen, was rife with frustrations. My plan is to use this pen as my everyday carry, as a reminder to slow down, be patient, plan ahead, and try again. Seriously, though, this pen was a bit annoying to make.

In today’s video, I turn a Luxor Push Button Click Pen. It’s the first one that I’ve made and I quite like it. The mechanism feels smooth and reliable. There’s an attractive simplicity to the pen.
I turn another European Round Top pen in this video. This time, I use Bubinga wood and gold hardware. Finishing this pen took some doing because I couldn’t get the CA accelerator to spray properly. Overall, I’m pretty pleased with the pen. What do you think?

This week, I turn a European Round Top pen using Holly wood and gunmetal hardware. The colour of Holly looks almost pure. I used a CA finish to give this pen a glossy look and glassy feel. The subtle curves on this pen really appeal to me, as well.

In this week’s video, I turn a straightforward slimline pen with Palo Santo Rosewood and use antique brass hardware. Sometimes, these seemingly simple designs require a bit more focus because there isn’t any room to hide small mistakes. Palo Santo Rosewood is definitely one of my favourites to work with.

I turn a Budget European Round Top pen in this video. The pen is made with Bloodwood wood and uses chrome hardware. These pens are always a bit tricky because they do require some precision. It’s a great pen to turn because it keeps you engaged. Bloodwood has to be one of my favourite woods.
