  • Christmas Ornament | Woodturning | Redheart Wood

In today’s video, I turn a Christmas ornament with Redheart wood. This was a quick, fun project. Nothing too exciting but something a little special – it feels good to make things to celebrate with.

Thank you all, so much, for your support throughout 2023. It was a great year and I’m hopeful 2024 will be even better. I wish you all the very best for the holiday season and the upcoming year.

    Keep well.

  • Pen Turning | Purple Poly Resin and Gaboon Ebony with Gold Hardware Baron Fountain Pen

In today’s video, I turn a Baron fountain pen. Initially, I was working on a RAW brass pen with Black Palm wood but that didn’t work so I switched gears. I tried a new process for finishing this pen, using Yorkshire Grit fine and microfine abrasive pastes. In the end, I’m not too excited about this one, but that’s probably just a me thing.

  • Wood Turning | Purpleheart Wood Single Seam Ripper

In today’s video, I turn a single seam ripper with Purpleheart and satin gold hardware. I like how this one turned out. The shape looks comfortable to me. This one was fun to turn – the curves made it feel like it was flowing and I got into a rhythm with it. What do you think? If you sew, does this look like a comfortable shape to you? • Crochet Needle Kit | Caribbean Rosewood Crochet Needle Handle

In today’s video, I turn a handle for a crochet needle set. Turning this was very similar to a pen. I went off some pictures on the internet and suggestions from people to come up with a design. The Caribbean Rosewood is quite soft, making it a delicate turning. Even sanding was a bit tricky, being careful not to leave any marks.

When I started writing these near-daily posts, I agreed with myself that I wouldn’t work too hard at them. Some days, all I’ll post is a picture or a quick thought. Other days, I’ll put something more in depth together. Today is going to be a quick day.

I was thinking about a philosophy based on woodworking while I was working at the lathe today. Surely, one must already exist. Woodworkers strike me as the type of people who are introspective and critical of themselves and the world. The craft is driven by precision, so much so that it lends itself to a systematic worldview.

  • Bowl Turning | Leopardwood Bowl

In this video, I turn a Leopardwood bowl. It’s fairly small at 4″ in diameter and 2″ thick. This is one of four that’ll be in a set together. The wood was tricky to work with. It has a varying grain pattern and is quite hard. In the end, it turned out pretty well.

I got wood today. An ad on the internet turned me on to it. The first one I tried didn’t work out but the second one did. I got so excited about it that I couldn’t think of anything else until I dealt with it. Incidentally, I saw the wood yesterday and didn’t do anything about it. Apparently, it’s hardwood.

I bought HSS chisels and a bench grinder today. Using them scared the shit right out of me.

It’s been over a week since I’ve been to the workshop. I was reminded that I’d been away when I got my box of new materials in the mail. The package has some weight to it.

  • Pen Turning | Ebony Wood with Chrome Hardware Cigar Pen

In this week’s video, I turn a cigar pen with Ebony wood and chrome hardware. This pen is part of a custom order for a men’s clothing store in Toronto. Ebony is a dusty wood to work with, especially when using carbide chisels, but it finishes beautifully. I used a simple friction finish, Shellawax, to help preserve the feeling of the wood. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

I woke up today with a lot on my mind. Well, a lot of ideas about what to do with the workshop. I’m having trouble keeping things straight so I had to start a list. I managed to write down two items before forgetting about it, as well. To help me move forward, I decided that the only thing I needed to accomplish today was to move stuff over to the workshop. That’s it.
