Today’s Prompt: What lives inside the silence of your life?
I’m reluctant to admit that I have a difficult time with silence, or quiet. Simultaneously, I often find environments overwhelming with noise. There’s a delicate balance that is tolerable for me.

Woodworkers strike me as the type of people who are introspective and critical of themselves and the world. The craft is driven by precision, so much so that it lends itself to a systematic worldview.

I got out of bed around 10:00 this morning. Well, I got out of bed at 7:00 am to feed the girls and then went back to bed. There are very few mornings when Eloise isn’t pestering me to get out of bed to feed them. If nipping at my toes doesn’t work, she’ll start scratching at my bum through the sheets. Genevieve is clever enough to let her sister do the work.

One-hundred-day streak. That’s pretty good.
A few years ago, I set myself the goal of writing three hundred blog posts in a year. I think I wrote ninety-odd. I went in hot, thinking I would be able to make every day meaningful. It didn’t work.

When I was studying Philosophy, I remember proudly proclaiming that I loved living in a world of ideas. I wanted to stay in that world forever. I believed that that’s where I belonged.

This morning, I was thinking about whether or not there is a thread running through these daily blog posts. I was thinking about using these posts to write a story, maybe even a novella. Working on something longer and more in depth feels like a good idea. It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a while, now.

As a general rule, I’d rather not touch people or have them touch me. Today, however, I went for a massage. My back has been acting up and the irregular stretching and pain medication wasn’t enough to alleviate the tension. The massage helped but I booked another appointment. There’s a lot of work to be done.

I met with a counsellor recently who ended our first session together with this: “Check in with yourself and notice how you feel.” After an hour-long session, I was being asked to self-reflect. While this is solid advice, it left me feeling unheard because self-reflection is what led me to seek out assistance. What I needed from the session were practical takeaways – what can I do to start climbing out of this rut? Sharpening the shovel that I used to dig the hole isn’t going to help.

Faizal Westcott, in his video, “Is Street Photography With No People Still Street Photography?” says: “street photography is capturing the human presence.” With this definition, the answer to the question in the title is, “yes.” Westcott then uses the work of Fred Herzog to substantiate his point. Herzog, Westcott says, expresses the human experience in the time he was documenting without using people in his photos. Because his work reflects the human experience, it’s considered a form of street photography. The value in Herzog’s work is in the documentation of the ordinary and everyday.
