F— found the post-it note when she emptied her pockets before throwing her jeans in the hamper. “Who would make a note of the fact that they want to love someone?” she thought. “Maybe it wasn’t a reminder, maybe it was a note from one person to another, probably a woman to a man. No, it was from a man to a woman. Coward.”

NaNoWriMo #4
“Boy don’t you know you can’t escape me,” K— sang as she drove home from work. Singing along with Mariah Carey put her in a good mood after a tougher day at work. “And we’ll linger on, sime-tane-eous the feelin’ is strong….”

NaNoWriMo #3
“Why do I still miss her?” M— thought as he walked into his apartment. “She didn’t even like me.”

NaNoWriMo #2
When F— got home after brunch, she made herself a cup of tea and sat on the armchair closest to the window of her living room. She sat sideways so she could look outside and watch people walking by. From the fifteenth floor, she could see enough detail to read peoples’ body language.

NaNoWriMo #1
I first heard about NaNoWriMo a good while ago. I paid little attention to it but have been reminded of it every November since then. I thought I might try to participate in some way this year.

A Pear Tree in a Playground
It’s an odd place for it, at the edge of a children’s playground. It doesn’t quite belong but it’s always been there, for as long as I can remember. It can’t be there on purpose, it’s the result of an accident. I’m sure of it. Why would anyone plant a pear tree there?

The story behind five of the day’s pictures – January 9, 2021

I Suggest You Shop Elsewhere
It’s been a little over nine months now, and I think that I’m finally ready to talk about it. Even now, on some nights, I’ll lose anywhere from five to fifteen minutes of sleep because I’m thinking about what happened. I discussed it with my therapist at the time, but that was on the third of our fourth session together. I’m hoping that sharing my story will help liberate me from underneath this weight that has been bearing down on me.

CBC Nonfiction Prize – Working on My Submission
I’ve been working on my submission to the CBC Nonfiction Prize. I’ve hit a bit of a hurdle, though. I’m stuck trying to figure out how to get the ideas that are in my head onto the page.
What are your experiences with submitting to writing contests? What do you do when you get stuck?

I Still Miss You, Even After All That Was Nothing
It’s undeniable that some time has passed between us. What little we did talk during then has held us together like the imperceptible knots tying strings of thread, being joined to continue knitting a blanket. We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for those knots, but they make little difference to what has brought us together again.

Running out of time
It must have been a couple of years ago when I decided that I wanted to write a novel by the time I turn 35. I’ve flirted with the idea more seriously since I wrote the reminder on the whiteboard that hangs above my desk. With only 11 months to go, I’m not sure that I’m going to make it. (more…)
