  • Day 15 – Trust

Today’s prompt: Where is trust asking to be rebuilt, extended, or reclaimed in your life?

Every now and again, the idea of writing a book pops into my head. The impetus for these latest string of daily posts is that very prospect. Trouble is, I don’t know what I’d write about, despite having a few ideas, because I don’t know that what I want to tell warrants the effort.

The 3D printer is awesome. The rabbit turned out pretty nicely. It’s amazing to me that this sort of technology exists. The ideas that I have for what I’d like to print with it keep coming to me in a steady wave. I haven’t written any of them down.

Today, though, something else is on my mind for this blog post: is there a difference between a writer and someone who writes? It came up in a conversation with my girlfriend. I don’t quite remember the context but the question remains an interesting one.

Is a mule half an ass?

I got a comment on one of my YouTube videos today that was a good reminder of why it’s important to put in the work. Complaining about the work that other people are doing is really easy when you aren’t doing the work yourself. I’m guilty of this.

What limits should be placed on the things we write? Are there lines we shouldn’t cross? Should we attempt to breach certain conventions? Whose opinion and/or feelings is it okay to ignore?

    April 26, 2023

I’m not quite sure what the word is that I’m looking for. It could be “aggravated,” or “aggrieved,” even. “Unsettled,” captures some of it, but, then, so does, “indifferent.” There’s an amazingly long scroll of words running down the inside of my forehead right now. They’re mostly synonyms.

What I really want to do with this unlabelled feeling is reframe the parameters of its purview. I want to start seeing the opportunities that exist in front of me, instead of all the potholes, constructions zones, and traffic that’s currently driving me nuts. The lens that I’m currently looking through is murky. Surely, there’s a lesson in all of this.

It’s other people and my interactions with them that are grinding me down. I feel as though people have become entirely self-serving and have lost an awareness of others. People seem to be endlessly in need of something but never have enough to give to others. To get what they want, people will exploit your weaknesses and force your hand.

Thinking about it now, I’m thinking that maybe I’m not feeling seen. If it’s true, it’d be in both the literal and figurative senses.

“Invisible,” would be the right word to describe that feeling.

Ramadan Email | Emails at Work

I started in my current role as the teacher-librarian at our school a couple of years ago. To get information out, I have to send broadcast emails to all of the staff, and I try to make them interesting to read. The email I sent earlier this week has gotten a lot of positive feedback. A few people have told me that reading my emails makes them smile. Hearing this makes me feel good.

  • “Say Less”

    “Say Less”

A few years ago, I came across the phrase, “Say less,” and it didn’t make much sense to me. I asked someone to explain it to me. They did. Essentially, it means, “I understand and you don’t need to explain any further.”

These days, the phrase has taken on a slightly different meaning for me. I want to stop talking so much. More specifically, I want to stop complaining as much as I have been. So, I find myself telling myself to talk less.

I figure I have two options, either I accept that I like talking and continue talking or I say less. While it often doesn’t feel like a choice, it is. I probably don’t need to say nearly as much as I do. And, well, I probably shouldn’t trust that other people want to hear what I have to say.

It’s taken me about a week to type this post up on my phone because I’ve been rather poor about investing time into my blog. I’d like for that to change. (Remember me saying this, then?) I’m going to try different outlets, instead of talking to people directly. This blog is first up. Journaling, an audio diary, and a video diary are the next three options. See, I think that what I’m trying to do I communicate with people and that’s not as easy when I’m writing or speaking privately.

“Why not just use Twitter or Instagram?” I feel like I have more ownership over this space, my blog, than I do other social media platforms. I have a smaller following here, making for a more comfortable, intimate setting.

So, with that, let’s see how this goes, shall we?

    How we’re seen

It seemed as though I was being reminded today that it’s easier to see the strength and good quality of others than it is to see in ourselves.

  • Yep, def weird

    Yep, def weird

A few days ago, I sent my friend a text message asking if I’m weird. I can’t remember why I asked the question but something must have come up to spark the need for reassurance or confirmation or refutation. The message I got back was simply, “Yep, def weird. Weird is good.” The question needn’t more of an answer.

  • Self-Promotion

    Self-Promotion

Last week, I was standing in one of the six aisles of cat wet food at a PetSmart when I got a text from a friend of mine. He was asking me about my latest blog post. He was just curious to know how I was promoting myself. When he found out that I don’t do much, he asked if I’m just writing for myself. I told him that I am, that when I was focussed on my stats, I would get discouraged when I didn’t get the readership that I was hoping for. Now, I just try to focus on writing. If I can do that, I feel successful.

  • Self-Expression, Part 1

    Self-Expression, Part 1

I have a hard time expressing myself. It’s true. Far too often I find myself in a pickle because I found myself dumbfounded or, more often, excessively revealing. Both extremes stem from the same source: my inability to properly measure the value of the message that I’m trying to deliver.
