  • Pen Turning | Blue-Green Poly Resin blank Luxor Push Button Click Pen with Titanium Blue Hardware

Hey folks, after a little while away, I’m back! In today’s video, I turn a Luxor push button click pen with a blue-green poly resin blank and titanium blue hardware. This one took a good while to turn, much longer than I anticipated. Luckily, it sanded up and polished real nice. I’m not generally a fan of the titanium blue hardware but I think it pairs well with this blank. What do you think?

  • Pen Turning | Redheart with Titanium Gold Hardware Slimline Pen

In today’s video, I turn a slimline ballpoint pen using Redheart wood and titanium gold hardware. This is my first time turning Redheart and I quite enjoyed it. It felt softer, requiring a gentler touch. The colour of the wood is just stunning. For this pen, I opted for a friction finish, Shellewax, instead of a CA finish, because I wanted to preserve the feeling of this wood when holding the pen.

  • Pen Turning | “Sorry” Poly-Resin Pen Blank with RAW Brass Fountain Pen Hardware

In today’s video, I turn a poly-resin blank – the design is called “Sorry.” The final pen uses RAW brass hardware. I think the colours work great together. I like that this RAW brass kit has a clip on the lid – many don’t. This blank took a good hour and a half to turn down to size because I had to go very gingerly. The catches were bad, leaving pockets in the resin, when I was getting too aggressive. The time and effort paid off.

When I started writing these near-daily posts, I agreed with myself that I wouldn’t work too hard at them. Some days, all I’ll post is a picture or a quick thought. Other days, I’ll put something more in depth together. Today is going to be a quick day.

  • Pen Turning | Purpleheart Gear Shift Pen

In today’s video, I turn a gear shift pen with Purpleheart wood. I think the curved profile works well with this kit, complementing the weight of the pen. I chose a high-gloss, CA finish because, well, it’s like a freshly waxed car – shiny. The mechanism for this pen is a lot of fun to play with, and definitely something I wouldn’t be able to have with me in a meeting.

  • Pen Turning | Bloodwood with Chrome Hardware Sedona Rollerball

Pen Turning | Bloodwood with Chrome Hardware Sedona Rollerball

In this video, I turn a Sedona rollerball pen with bloodwood and chrome hardware. This has to be one of my favourite-looking woods with its rich red colour and highlight accents. The CA finish just makes it shine. I like the lines of this pen, in the grain, shape, and pen grip. It seems to point forward. What do you think?

  • Pen Turning | Ebony Wood with Chrome Hardware Cigar Pen

In this week’s video, I turn a cigar pen with Ebony wood and chrome hardware. This pen is part of a custom order for a men’s clothing store in Toronto. Ebony is a dusty wood to work with, especially when using carbide chisels, but it finishes beautifully. I used a simple friction finish, Shellawax, to help preserve the feeling of the wood. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Pen Turning | European Round Top with Sugar Maple Wood and Gunmetal Hardware

In this video, I turn a European Round Top pen using Sugar Maple wood and gunmetal hardware. I like the grip section of this one. The bulbous part gives your fingers a nice place to sit while writing. These light-coloured woods look better to me each time I turn one.

  • Pen Turning | Curly Maple with Gold Hardware Virage Fountain Pen

Pen Turning | Curly Maple with Gold Hardware Virage Fountain Pen

In this video, I turn a virage fountain pen using Curly Maple wood and gold hardware. I like this design quite a bit; I’ve done something similar with other woods. I was worried that the light colour of the wood would clash with the gold but it turned out to be all right.

Pen Turning | Maple with Two-Tone Chrome Hardware Cigar Pen

I turn a cigar pen in this video, using Maple wood and two-tone chrome hardware. These pens have a nice bulk to them, they feel solid in your hand. The Maple has a beautiful grain pattern that really comes through when the pen is finished with CA.

    July 22, 2023

Playing used to mean going outside to ride my bike, play street hockey, shoot hoops in the driveway, or build something with Lego. It made senses to call those activities “playing” because they were fun and carefree. Going to the playground wouldn’t be all that much fun if it were work.

    July 18, 2023

The last couple of days haven’t been bad but things haven’t felt like they’re going right. It’s as if all of my actions are being tempered by a tension band. Nothing is impossible but it’s a little harder and sometimes I just don’t have the strength to follow through.
