  • April 17, 2026: The Risk

Prompt: Write about a risk that feels both exciting and uncomfortable.

Adjusting to my new school has come with some challenges. Namely, I don’t know that I get along with, or like, many of my colleagues. There’s no animosity, but neither is there a connection. The year has been an exceptional one, in that we had a baby, I got wicked sick in the winter, and then I broke a bone in my wrist on my way to work on the Monday after March Break. Pair all of these things together, and the year has been busy.

Recently, a Position of Responsibility role was posted so I applied for it. The title implies a grander status than the job warrants. I’m still waiting to hear back after the interview. Even my administrators were surprised to see my application come through. Them trying to understand why I applied for the position to satisfy their curiosity become part of the interview itself.

Is it exciting? Not really. Am I made uncomfortable by it? Not as such. Still, it feels like a small risk in an environment I’m not entirely well seated in. Perhaps some good will come of it and I’ll learn little bit more about myself.

  • February 4, 2026: A Small Detail

Today’s prompt: Write about a small detail from your childhood that stayed with you.

Forget my childhood, there’s a small detail from Emi’s childhood that I want to remember: today, we “talked” to each other. She made a gentle gurgling sound, and I replied with one. We conversed through gentle gurgles. We both smiled and giggled. This went on for quite some time, long enough for me to call Hannah over to take a voice memo of the interaction.

Emi has been in this world with us for a month. Unbelievable. It’s hard to recall all that has happened since the day she was born, not least because of the lack of consistent and rejuvenating sleep.

We likely overdid it with Emi today. First, my parents came by in the morning to say goodbye before they left, then we went to the first family gathering, and we followed that up with a second family gathering. It was a busy day for her, and for us.

I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror this evening…dad mode has been activated.

This picture was taken after she had just thrown up all over me and we both needed to change.

  • She’ll be here soon

Tomorrow has been a deadline for some many things. Get the wall unit and bookshelf built. Check. Get the pen orders done. Half-check. Prepare your plans for school. Check. Get your vaccines for the year. Check. I’ve been chasing checkmarks.

  • Two Days to Go

I’m expecting the baby to be late. Apparently, the first ones always are. I was two days late. I’m still regularly late. But, I can’t live my life on what might be. Instead, I have to work with what I know.

As if I didn’t already have enough to do, I went and decided to try crocheting. It started with the idea of making our baby a blanket, which came to mind because my mom crocheted blankets when she was pregnant with me and my sister. I thought it might be nice to do something similar. Of course, crochet isn’t as simple as running a hook through wool.

The story this picture doesn’t tell is how many times I’ve unraveled the yarn.

I stood there dumbfounded, unable to think on my feet and with nowhere to sit. My eyes wandered, looking for a solution. Finally, I heard her voice, calling the students back to the carpet, same as I had been doing, and proposing to sing a song, which I avoided doing. That early childhood educator helped me through that first period back.

I haven’t been keeping up with posting!

I started working on this wagon today. I need to get some hardware to fit the wheels on. Then, sanding, finishing, reassembly, and ride.

  • August 10, 2025: Stroller Buying Advice

The goal for today was just to go look at strollers to help us make sense of the descriptions we’ve been reading online. Of course, by the end of the day we had purchased one. We didn’t search far and wide for one, visiting only three stores. ChatGPT was incredibly useful when doing some research, too.
