  • February 13, 2026: Remembered Room

Today’s prompt: Write about a room you remember well.

The one room that I’ll always remember is in the second house our family lived in. We went from a bungalow to a two-storey house with a garage.

  • February 12, 2026: Once Important

Today’s prompt: Write about something ordinary that once felt important.

The preeminence that I place on formal education has lessened. Working in education has taught me that formal education is not designed for everyone. In fact, my parents are good examples of how intelligence and capability are not counted in credits.

  • February 11, 2026: A Lost Photograph

Today’s prompt: Write about a photograph you remember, even if you don’t have it anymore.

While I was an exchange student in Finland, I took a photography course, figuring it was something I could do to communicate with people without having to speak Finnish, a difficult language to learn, especially when you don’t want to. I bought an SLR and started walking around taking pictures instead of going to class.

  • February 10, 2026: A Sound Elsewhere

Today’s prompt: Write about a sound that takes you somewhere else.

My mother has a very distinctive sneeze. It’s loud and wet. I can remember her sneezing during a meditation ceremony at mosque once when I was a kid. Every time I hear her sneeze, which doesn’t happen often these days, I picture myself sitting on that red carpet next to my dad. We were on the gents side and she on the ladies.

You know, I’m not sure that the carpet was red.

Today’s prompt comes from Letters’ Lounge.

  • February 9, 2026: Scent Memory

Today’s prompt: Write about a smell that brings a memory with it.

It has to be my parents’ favourite perfumes.

    Dad: Polo Cologne

    Mom: Sung by Alfred Sung

  • February 8, 2026: Kept Objects

Today’s prompt: Write about an object you’ve kept longer than expected.

I’m not a hoarder, but I definitely do keep things longer than I should. Right now, there’s a stack of at least 15 white t-shirts sitting on a shelf in my closet that I’ll never wear but can’t get myself to get rid of. Many are stained from being worn while I was woodworking, others don’t fit well, and the collars of some are wimpy. Will I really use them as rags?

  • February 6, 2026: Stepping Back In

Today’s prompt: Write about a memory you wish you could step back into briefly.

I wish I could drive my 2008 Honda Civic SI again. I’d take it on a road trip across the country, turn up the music, and just drive. It was a great car to drive.

  • February 4, 2026: A Small Detail

Today’s prompt: Write about a small detail from your childhood that stayed with you.

Forget my childhood, there’s a small detail from Emi’s childhood that I want to remember: today, we “talked” to each other. She made a gentle gurgling sound, and I replied with one. We conversed through gentle gurgles. We both smiled and giggled. This went on for quite some time, long enough for me to call Hannah over to take a voice memo of the interaction.

  • February 3, 2026: A Place that Lingers

Today’s prompt: Write about a place you remember, even if you haven’t been there in years.

I often think about the lilac bush that was outside the first house I remember living in. The house was a bungalow, tucked in the elbow of a bending cul-de-sac, with three large vertical rectangular windows on the street-facing side. The main entrance was to the left, and the “rear” entrance was on the right. We hardly ever used the main entrance, the view of which was blocked by the lilac bush.

  • February 2, 2026: Remembered Differently

Today’s prompt: Write about something you remember clearly that others recall differently.

Isn’t this what’s at the heart of so many misunderstandings? I suppose, it’s the parts of an experience that we remember are different, even if the overall experience was the same. Or, is it that we remember all of the same parts but our perspective of them is different?

  • February 1, 2026: The Unexpected Return

Today’s prompt: Write about a memory that returns to you unexpectedly.

Memories tend to creep up on me when I’m working at the lathe. There must be something about the flow that I get myself into when things are working well, the chisels are sharp and the wood curls cleaning off the blank. My body starts to work on its own, leaving my mind free to wander.
