    What colleges have you attended?

Listing off the schools that I’ve attended probably won’t be all that interesting to read. Well, I guess, it might be more interesting than what you’re about to read if what I write next is not of interest to you.

The most interesting schooling experience that I’ve had was when I was attending a photography class in Finland. I don’t speak Finnish. The instructor didn’t speak English. We were developing film in a dark room. I didn’t fully appreciate just how interesting my life was at the time.

I stole a book on photography from a classmate. Accidentally, of course, but I did take it. She lent it to me because it was in English. I lost it the following year, somewhere in my dorm. There were negatives tucked into the back of that book that’ll never get processed. I remember there being pictures of boats being stored in a wooded area behind the house of my host family.

Photography was important to me during my experience as an exchange student. Given the language barrier, it was the most effective way I found to express myself. People were able to read into my photographs. They saw something that I didn’t, perhaps because they were looking at a piece of me.

Do you play in your daily life? What says “playtime” to you?

Play seems to be a function of intention. If you’re just shooting hoops with some friends, that’s playing. If you’re trying to get better at getting the ball in the hole, that’s practicing. If you’re getting paid to throw a ball into a net, that’s work. Essentially, the activity is all the same.

I would say that I play on the daily. When I’m at the workshop, I say that I’m “playing” when I’m working on something. I’m not a gamer, but I play the New York Times’ Daily Mini, Wordle, and Connections. Those are fun. Sometimes, I’ll work on a digital puzzle. For the last couple of days, I’ve been playing a racing car game, which I’ll tire of soon enough.

Not everything I do during the day is immediately purposeful. Some of what I do during the day is simply to enjoy the process. To me, that’s playful.

Bloganuary: What are your biggest challenges?

Self-discipline. It has to be. I realise that it’s just the one thing and the question is asking for a multitude of things. My self-discipline affects many areas of my life, though, so…I am envious of people who appear to have their shit together.

I am able to commit to something that I want, sometimes to obsession. What I struggle most with is commitment over time. My focus gets blurry, my passion wanes, my gumption goes away. Thus, the challenge of self-discipline.

It’s difficult for me to see purpose without a product. Because going to the gym once won’t make me beefy, going a second time doesn’t feel worthwhile. This, however, is one of those things in life, like there are so many others, that is productive over a period of time, with consistent effort. Writing a book, getting a Master’s degree, and reading a chapter book, are just the same.

I admire people who intentionally work toward a vision they have of themselves in the future by putting in the necessary effort now. They must have an understanding of time that I don’t. Is time a collection or sequence of moments?

Self-discipline is something I certainly want to work on this year. I want to remain integral to my personal goals, to my self-identity, to my vision of my future self. To do this, however, I must first paint that picture, which’ll likely take some time.

    Fuck.

Where is the best place to watch the sunset near you?

You know, I can’t remember the last time I saw a sunset ’round here. The last sunset I recall is the one I saw while on an overpass in my hometown. That sunset is one of the best I know.

What would you title the chapters of your autobiography?

About five years ago, I started working on, what I called, a Collection of Recollections. I would sit down at my typewriter and write about something from my past. It was usually about people. I had intended to type it up on the computer and compile it into something whole and complete.

What is something you learned recently?

About a year ago, I started making pens. It was entirely new to me. I love it. My interest in woodworking has continued to grow since then and I have everything to learn at each turn.

  • Describe your perfect birthday cake.

    Describe your perfect birthday cake.

I don’t like celebrating my birthday. I can get pretty grumpy about it and just want to be left well alone.

Last year, the “birthday committee” at work sent out a broadcast email on my birthday. They send one out for everyone but I had asked that they not for me. It went out and a lot of people responded. Thinking back, I was a bit of an ass to reply with something like, “Thank you but I really don’t like celebrating my birthday.”

That has nothing to do with a birthday cake, however. I must’ve gotten myself a slice of carrot cake from the Rabba, which is an upgraded convenience store, nearest me and eaten it. That was more than enough for me on my birthday. I wasn’t going to bother about a candle.

  • What are the pros and cons of procrastination?

What are the pros and cons of procrastination?

Procrastination is proportional to priority. My priorities are measured against an arbitrary standard of interest. What I’ll procrastinate on is entirely dependent on my mood.

  • What language do you wish you could speak?

What language do you wish you could speak?

French. Being a Canadian who has lived in a predominantly French-speaking province and who works in a bilingual school, I really should know how to speak the language. I’ve even given my cats French names! Same as when people speak French, I don’t understand what Eloise and Genevieve are saying most of time.

What is a song or poem that speaks to you and why?

Soon after getting my first car, I would drive to a neighbouring town to smoke cigarettes. It became a regular habit of mine. It was easier for me to stay awake later back then.

What’s a lie you tell yourself?

The problem with most of the lies that I tell myself is that I think most of them are, in fact, truths. What I believe to be true and what other people believe to be true can differ and that’s when things get a bit confusing.
