Once again, I’ve decided to blog under my real name. It’s time for me to start taking real ownership of my ideas, and not hide behind a pseudonym. Now feels like the right time to make the shift.

    I’m starting to miss blogging

When the number of unread emails in my inbox surpasses around 1500, I start deleting them. There are plenty of unread emails that have been marked as read but they aren’t included in the count that Gmail gives me.

My double life online, separating my personal and professional selves

I almost hit, “Tweet.” I was gonna do it, I was. The words had been written and all that was left to do was hit that blue button. I could’ve but I didn’t. I stopped myself. Just in time? Maybe.

  • My first two cents

    My first two cents

Since signing up with Medium about a month ago, I’ve been endlessly curious about my stats. The prospect of earning some money through my writing is incredibly attractive to me. It’s not just the stats and money that I’m after, but it’s hard to deny that it’s a nice bonus. My real objective is to follow through on the challenge of putting my work out into the world consistently.

Three ways to stay motivated as a blogger with a small readership

I’ve kept a blog since 2008. For the last twelve-or-so years, I’ve been writing inconsistently and haven’t met with much “success” as a blogger. I write mostly personal stories and share my ideas on various things. In many ways, my blog has been and is a public diary.

8 Reasons You Should Start a Blog in 2021

If 2020 gave us anything, it was time. Most of the things we usually spend our time doing, like meeting up with friends for coffee or dinner, going for drinks, or just ordering in, weren’t allowed for most of the year. Instead of spending our time doing something, we spent a lot of time looking for things to do. If there’s one thing that we learned from 2020, it’s that our time spent with others, the time we spend creating and sharing our stories, is precious.

Blogging is a phenomenal way of sharing your stories and 2021 is the perfect year for it. Blogging isn’t dead – it’s just been taking a nap.

The Last Vlog (in this series)

In this week’s vlog, I find myself at The Beaches in Toronto. Lake Ontario didn’t disappoint. This is going to be the last vlog in this series, and in the video I share some of the things that I learned by working on this project. In the end, I think the most important thing that I’m taking away from this is that I felt really good by creating something new. I hope that you do the same.

Bending Time a bit with Long Exposure Photography | Aly walks around taking pictures of Toronto, and he talks, too

This week, I spent some time working with long exposure photography. I went out to Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Bluffers Park in Scarborough, Ontario. I got to thinking about how photography influences our perspective on the world.

Allan Gardens | Aly walks around taking pictures of Toronto, and he talks, too

On Tuesday, I made my way to Allan Gardens in downtown Toronto. There had been a tornado warning earlier in the evening but I ventured out when I saw a break in the clouds. The colours that came out after the rain and because of the flat light coming through the clouds were incredible. I’m really glad that I finally made it out there and I was rewarded for taking a chance on the weather.

Aly walks around taking pictures of Toronto, and he talks, too | visiting Calgary

I went out to Calgary to visit my folks. While I was there, I went around and took some pictures. I never appreciated what Calgary has to offer as much as I did during this trip. In many ways, it’s the opposite of Toronto; the availability of space and access to nature is just one of those ways.

During this trip, I took some pictures in Banff, Alberta and Big Hill Springs Provincial Park. If you are out that way, be sure to check out both. They won’t disappoint.

  • I’m Working on a Podcast

    I’m Working on a Podcast

Generally speaking, I don’t like to share what I’m working on because it messes up my mojo when I do. I end up not finishing whatever I said that I would do because I’ve already told you about it so what’s the point in seeing it through now? I mean, if I told you I’d give you a ride home and then I bounce, I still got home.
