Okay, the prompt for today, July 20th, 2026, is: Write about a responsibility you carry.
I wonder if our responsibilities are a result of our choices.
One of my biggest responsibilities right now is our daughter. And in order to support her, I have a responsibility to my wife. Then, in order to support both of them, I have a responsibility to go to work. At work, I have responsibilities to the children I teach. So, in a way, one responsibility leads to another.
I don’t know how far back you could trace that chain, but it makes me wonder how all of our responsibilities come together.
My relationship with work has definitely changed since having our daughter. My relationship with my wife has changed too, in very positive ways. But the responsibilities around the house have changed as well. Before, I didn’t have to worry about washing bottles or waking up at ungodly hours in the morning. Now I do, and Hannah and I have to trade those responsibilities back and forth so that neither of us carries too much.
Because of that, my relationship with the responsibilities I’ve taken on outside of my family has changed as well. The workshop, SANA Stationery & Gifts, all my projects—they all have to fit around everything else now. I can’t work on them as often or as freely as I’d like. I have to find the time, and if I don’t use that time well, I lose the opportunity.
The responsibility I’ve given myself to make YouTube videos, post online, make things, list them, and hopefully sell them—all of that has changed because it’s shaped by the responsibilities that came before it.
I don’t know exactly what that means.
But I do think that what we choose to be most responsible for is, in some ways, an indication of where we place our greatest care.
Would I get another job? Sure.
Could I get another Emi? No.
Could I get another wife? Probably not.
So I have to make choices that allow me to fulfill the responsibilities I value most, even if that comes at the expense of others.
I think that’s probably what responsibility is really about.
