I think, really, it’s the actual process of making. I love having a vision in my head of something and then being able to find the right materials and resources to put it together. It’s that process that interests me most.
To be quite frank, the finished product isn’t even the main attraction. The end goal is what guides the process, and that’s where much of its value lies. The product provides direction. What’s most interesting to me is how you get there. What tools do you need? What materials do you need? How do you use them? How do you put them together?
Having said that, the process is probably also the most frustrating and distracting part for me. It’s very easy for me to get caught up in too many details, find myself going down a rabbit hole, talk myself out of continuing, and then give up on a project before reaching the end.
It’s an interesting kind of purgatory.
I do struggle with this because the product is what you sell. The product is what gives you the resources to continue the process. Until I can figure out how to sit down, take the photos, list the products, sell them, talk to people who might promote my work, and believe in it enough to say, “This is good. This is valuable. This is worth your time and money,” the rest of it becomes difficult to sustain.
Still, it’s definitely my favorite part: seeing something realized that once existed only in the mind’s eye.
As I think about it, that’s probably why I enjoy watching process videos on YouTube so much. Woodturning videos, making videos, time-lapses of plants growing—it’s the process itself that fascinates me.
That’s what’s most interesting to me.
