It would be nice to have some grand project in mind for 2026, even just a 365 project. All that really comes to mind, what feels most reasonable, is working at reducing the amount I keep on my plate.
I recently heard about micro-habits, small changes you make in succession without committing to a timeline as you would with a resolution. It kind of turns SMART goals on their heads. With these, you have a short list of micro-habits you’d like to establish and you with through them, one at time, moving on only once you’ve successfully integrated the previous one into your life.
Say you wanted to get to work earlier, you might start making lunches in the evenings, setting out your clothes the night before, and take coffee from home instead of buying it on your way to work. As I understand it, micro-habits would have you change only one thing at a time. If you start with setting your clothes out at night, you’d continue doing it until it becomes an established routine, only then would you decide to make your lunches in the evenings after dinner.
While I was hoping to think about what I would like 2026 to look like today, more intentionally than I have been, all I managed to ask myself is whether or not I should start posting links to these posts on Instagram again. It’s a bit tricky because I think I write differently when there’s a better chance of people finding my blog. On the other hand, I’m writing these things publicly for people to read. It was working well enough when I did it before.
Let me put out a call to action, an ATC as it’s known in the biz: if you think I should post links to these posts on Instagram, leave me a comment letting me know so. I suppose, you could leave a comment letting me know that you think it’s a bad idea, too.
That little tangent reminded me of something else that’s been on my mind: getting better at selling myself and my products. I have to convey my belief in them to you, the consumer, so that you’ll come to believe in the value my products hold for you. I have to sell it.
I suppose, this blog is something of a product of mine. I admire people who believe in their words and are proud to share them publicly, ready to relish the praise of their fans and to defend against naysayers. I waver, believing I’ve done well on some days.
Herein lies my opportunity to establish a micro-habit: posting links to my blog posts, despite my thoughts and feelings about the work. This won’t change how much is on my plate, I suppose, but it’s something. Heading in a direction, any direction, is a way forward; you can change paths at any time, by following one already worn in or by trodding on fresh ground to create your own.
I wish you all a very happy new year, hoping that it is full of positive progress in which ever direction you find yourself heading, no matter how big or small the steps you take may be.
