I can’t recall my parents ever having a cup of coffee at home until I was an adult. Being the contrarian youth that I was, I drank coffee. Come to think of it, it wasn’t until my first year at university that I really drank coffee. Every so often, I’d get a premade Frappuccino in a glass bottle from Starbucks, but never a hot coffee. It wasn’t long before I was drinking coffee multiple times a day.

Lately, I’ve been enjoying tea. I still have my morning coffee while I write my morning pages, and then again when I get to work (sometimes I’ll have two). Recently, I started bringing orange pekoe tea in a travel mug to enjoy after lunch, because another coffee would simply be too much. When I get home, it’s all decaffeinated drinks for me.

I ordered some loose leaf English Breakfast to enjoy when I get home. Decaffeinated, of course. I also ordered a can punch for the evaporated milk I pour in. I also like it with some sugar.

In the evenings, I resort to my trusted ginger turmeric tea. I started drinking it last year, when it was suggested to me by a coworker to help alleviate my cold. I just kept on with it.

The recipe is simple enough:

  1. Grate fresh ginger – maybe a two-inch piece.
  2. Grate fresh turmeric – maybe a three-inch piece.
  3. Set a pot with enough water for a mug, plus a little for evaporation, on the stove at slightly above medium.
  4. Put the freshly grated ginger and turmeric in the water and set a timer for 15-18 minutes, depending on how strong you like it. You don’t want a rolling boil. Instead, it should be a gentle gurgling. If the water turns a deep, rich reddish-brown, you’ve overdone it.
  5. Pour the tea through a strainer into a mug.
  6. Add honey, some lime or lemon juice, and freshly cracked pepper.
  7. Stir and enjoy.

It’s quite nice before bed. I can’t tell you what exactly they’re good for, but ginger and turmeric are said to have many health benefits. The honey is soothing. The lime or lemon adds a slight zing. And, the pepper gives the tea some depth, and apparently, it’s good for you, too.

All good things. Enjoy.
