Figuring out how and when to sleep has been tricky. What we’ve been trying is me taking the evening shift, until about midnight, while Hannah has some time to herself and sleeps if she wants and/or can. From then until the morning, it’s my turn to sleep so that I’m rested enough for work during the day.
We got through this first week okay.
I was hoping that I’d be able to come home tonight and give Hannah a longer evening off plus some time into the night. The plan started off well, I started looking after Emi and Hannah went off. Emi fell asleep in her bassinet so I put on a reply of the last free practice one session of the F1 season.
I fell asleep on the couch. Emi stayed asleep.
Hannah came down at some point, I woke up, Emi stayed asleep.
Gradually, Emi woke up and wasn’t able to calm down.
It seems that the number of things that we have to pay attention to are increasing. At first, it was a dirty diaper or hunger. She’s really sensitive to temperature changes, too, making diaper changes a challenge. Swaddles work well for keeping her contained, so she doesn’t startle herself away, but only if she’s tired enough to sleep when wrapped up in one. Tonight, for the first time that I’ve noticed, I think she wanted to be awake and do something. She seemed to settle only when I held her and walked around. Hannah says that she enjoys being rocked gently in her arms.
She’s down now, so I have a chance to type this up. I hear her gurgling and exhaling as she wrestles herself into position.
The world for her will only become a more interesting place, and all we’ll want to do is sleep.
