Have I already shared how little I’m looking forward to returning to work tomorrow? It could be that I’m nervous or anxious about going to work or that I’m sad to see the summer go. I’m going to miss doing what I like on my own schedule.
Work does provide my day with structure. I can’t wake up lazily at around 11 o’clock, lay in bed staring at nothing on my phone for a couple of hours, and then decide it’s time to make myself a coffee. Instead, I have to be up, usually before the sun, and ready to leave before rush hour really kicks in.
I’ll be riding my bike to work this year. The last time I rode my bike to school was probably when I was in grade nine, which was a good while ago. With Hannah and I at different schools, located in different directions from our house, carpooling isn’t feasible. I don’t mind riding my bike, in fact, I often prefer it to driving in this city. Oddly enough, I feel like I have more control when I’m on my bike.
That’s something to look forward to, I suppose.
I’ve been thinking about setting myself up with some goals for the school year. This summer, like all others, saw the realisation of too few. Goals, however, might not be the end in themselves. Instead, they may serve as a direction to head in while treading a path. With that in mind, it’s a bit easier to justify the exercise to myself.
What then, are these goals I want to have? In no particular order, here’s what’s currently, at this moment, on mind:
- Leave work at work – this includes not thinking or talking about it once I leave for the day
- Get to work early and leave on time – this should give me enough time to get my work done if I’m efficient with my time
- Start reading instead of watching TV shows on my iPad before bed
- Dress nicely for work – I don’t dress poorly, but I’d like to iron my shirts and wear different pants (I usually wear the same pair of jeans)
Much of what I’m looking to do is adopt a philosophy of “slow living.” I know very little about it, but I imagine it has to do with not playing Candy Crush (my game of the summer) on my phone. Doing less at any one time should help me focus on what I’m doing. Essentially, I’m looking to trade quantity for quality.
Of course, another goal I have is to blog regularly.
Wish my luck.
